Responsibilities
• The pastoral care and support of pupils in the school, including understanding of policies and procedures that affect the pastoral and academic progress of the pupils.
• Continued consideration of ways in which the pastoral provision might be improved.
• To oversee the professional development of pastoral staff
• The wellbeing and academic tracking of pupils, strategic planning for improved behaviour and academic performance.
• The rewarding and sanctioning of pupils.
• The staffing and allocation of pastoral duties.
• The appraising and development of pastoral staff.
• In an urgent situation the Assistant Head will make the pastoral issue her/his primary professional priority.
• To promote through example and practice the safeguarding of all DSAS’s students.
Terms
• An Assistant Head reports directly to their Head of School
• An Assistant Head receives a generous annual stipend
• The duration of the appointment will be determined by the length of contract
• An Assistant Head has a reduced teaching load, dependent on the scope of their role and any specific requirements of the timetable
• Performance will be subject to annual review
Duties attachment for Assistant Head Secondary School (Pastoral):
Duties-Pastoral
• Develop a positive ethos in the school
• Promote the well-being, the moral development and the progress of the students in the school
• Be aware of, and use, the public relations potential, through formal and informal contact with students’ parents/guardians
• Carry out a tracking overview and conduct appropriate follow-up (including contact with parents) where the mid-term grades and end of term report of a student indicates cause for concern including the likelihood of under-achievement
• With other pastoral staff and coordinators, initiate appropriate developments in the PSHE programme
• Support interviews with parents or students if required
• Discuss difficult cases with tutors/grade leaders, as they arise, and plan appropriate strategy. To be aware of, and co-ordinate as necessary, links between tutors and parents.
Duties-Pupil Behaviour
• Ensure a consistent and fair approach to discipline by all tutors/grade leaders which recognises and promotes good behaviour as well as upholding the school rules.
• Monitor the behaviour, appearance, dress and conduct of pupils in the school so that they uphold ethos of the school.
• Administer the rewards system and keep a record of pupil achievements.
• Administer the discipline system, keeping a record of sanctions (provided by admin. team) and take action including the giving of detentions
• Guide the student leadership team/prefects in the school to perform their responsibilities effectively, particularly the mentoring of younger pupils.
Duties-Organisational
• In collaboration with relevant colleagues, contribute to the development plan, maintaining a ‘whole school perspective’ at all times.
• Liaise with the Head of School and other relevant staff to select tutors
• Work closely with grade leaders, and delegate as appropriate, to ensure effective meeting of all requirements
• Lead and support team of tutors and grade leaders and take such action and initiate training to ensure professional performance of both
• Run meetings for tutors/grade leaders as appropriate
• Support the allocation of students to tutor groups before start of each school year
• Support the house coordinator/house leaders to organise teams and support house events
• Contribute to the organisation of school events
• Be ready to implement emergency procedure
• Attend meetings with the school leadership team and the Head of School, as directed
• Make recommendations to the Head of School on matters within the Assistant Head’s responsibilities
• Attend all parents’ events, as relevant
• Oversee the Student Council, student voice strategy and implementation
General
• To undertake such duties as may be reasonably required by the Head of School to promote the safety, well-being and development of the pupils.
