Purpose of Job
• To assist the Head of Upper School/Director of Sixth Form in ensuring that students are guided and advised suitably with regard to university destinations around the world.


Duties and Responsibilities
Leading the university application process
• Be expert in global university applications, including but not limited to UK, US, Singapore, Hong Kong China, Canada, and Australia.
• Ensure all student applications are of a high quality, and to support the writing of statements, collation of essays etc., and ensure they are sent by the published deadlines.
• Assist in administering PSAT and SAT, and other university testing programmes such as UK CAT, BMAT etc.
• Work with the Examinations officer and the Academic support in preparing all university transcripts.
• To liaise with Heads of academic departments to support students with university applications.
• Co-ordinate Oxbridge/ Ivy League Student Application Program.
• Lead student information sessions.
• Manage all aspects of the university platform (Unifrog) including delivering the student induction to the platform as per the schools university / careers preparation timeline
• Help develop and maintain overall Careers and University Guidance Program for Years 8 through to 12.

Guidance Counselling
• Hold regular meetings with Grades 9 and 10 and one-to-one guidance meetings with all Grade 11 and 12 students and their parents regarding their university applications.
• Ensure that the School Leadership Team and staff are advised regarding international developments regarding universities and Higher Education.


Managing the Careers support for students
• Oversee the implementation of and continue the expansion of the Careers Education Program for Years 8 to 12.
• Support Director of Sixth Form in organisation Careers Fair and other Career/University Fair events.
• Add comments relating to university/careers pathways to every student “Course Change” document before it is approved by the Head of Upper School.
• Assist with IGCSE and A-level subject selection.
• Lead staff training on Careers Education as appropriate.

Managing the reference writing process
• Manage the reference writing process for staff putting together university references for all university applications on Unifrog.
• Ensure that the subject teachers and academic staff are guided and supported to meet deadlines for writing references.
• Lead training on writing references for all university destinations.


Graduation Ceremony, alumni, and other roles
• Support the Head of Upper School/ Director of Sixth Form in preparing and conducting the annual Graduation Ceremony.
• Assist in preparing School Profile.
• Contribute towards ‘Destination's data’ for any documents such as Board of Governors’ reports.
• Assist the Director of Sixth Form in the management of expectations and behaviour in the Sixth Form Centre

University Fairs and other Liaison
• Meet with parents and keep all related parties, i.e. Head of Upper School, Director of Sixth Form, academic staff, Counselling Teams informed of individual student’s situation.
• Deliver regular information sessions to parents relating to University Guidance.
• Encourage Harrow students to attend university fairs. Be responsible for hosting the Fair when it comes to Harrow Chongqing.
• Liaise with the university counsellors in the AISL Harrow network
• Keep up to date with developments in terms of Higher Education and university counselling.
• Coordinate the program of university talks in school and ensure that these are publicized to students in the Senior Phase.
• Pass information to students regarding any relevant external university visits and summer schools.
• Liaise with visitors from universities around the world and continue to ensure that relations with university admissions officers are productive; arrange visits and talks with university admissions staff in coordination with the Head of Upper School/ Director of Sixth-Form

Safeguarding
• To take seriously the responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of children, and to work together with others to ensure adequate arrangements within the School help to identify, assess, and support children who are suffering harm.

Experience
Essential
• At least 3 years’ experience in a similar university guidance role with a demonstrable track record of success
• Experience of the application system.
• Experience of general university guidance for university applications including but not limited to UK, US, Singapore, HK China, Canada, and Australia.
• Experience in liaising with university admissions officers and other stakeholders.
• Experience of working with Chinese students and liaising with Chinese parents.
• Experience in coordinating or delivering a Careers Education Program.

Desirable
• Experience of working in an International School context.
• Experience of guidance with Oxbridge/ Ivy League applicants.
• Experience with hosting university visits or University Fairs.
• Familiar with Unifrog Application Platform.

Qualifications
Essential
• Bachelor’s Degree level qualification.
• Evidence of involvement in relevant professional development training.

Desirable
• Graduate qualified teacher.
• Master’s level qualification.

Other important features or requirements of the job:
• Contribute to the development of the overall Harrow vision and ensure that students, staff and parents all understand and subscribe to that vision.
• Be available to advise academic staff and individual students, ensuring that, so far as possible, each person’s individual needs are met so that they can exceed their potential, and that students’ progress is maintained in an effective way.


Education is an ever-changing service and all staff are expected to participate constructively in school activities and to adopt a flexible approach to their work. Whilst every effort has been made to explain the main duties and responsibilities of the post, each individual task undertaken may not be identified. The post holder will be expected to comply with any reasonable request from the line manager to undertake work of a similar level that is not specified in this job description. This job description may be amended at any time following discussion between the line manager and member of staff, and will be reviewed annually during the appraisal process, and will be varied in the light of the business needs of the school.
