Identify non conformity for rectification and ensure final resolution. Document production process for manufacturing records.
Main Duties of the Jobholder:
1. Familiarisation and review of the relevant standards, rules, WPS’s, drawings, codes and specifications applicable to the Project.
2. Check the following prior to welding:-
The current revision of the drawings are available and in use by fitters.
The WPS’s have been approved and are available to welders.
Check material certificates match Material Tracking Number, (MTN), or actual cast/heat and MTN number is visible on each piece.
Check material type matches drawing requirement
Check consumable certificates cast/heat/batch and type/size matches WPS requirement
Check gas certificates if available
Check welder register to ensure correct qualification to WPS and position.
Ensure that all tools to be used are of the right type, Carbon or stainless steel as applicable incl; grinding discs, wire brushes, etc. Ensure that fabrication aids are protected from contact in the case of stainless/exotic steels incl; stands, vices, etc.
Check rough dimensions and orientations of part.
Check piecemarks, (if required), are applied and legible.
Preheat, if required is at the minimum temperature and is in accordance with WPS
3. Check the following during welding:-
Purge gas, (if required), is at correct flow rate.
WPS inter-pass temperature is monitored and correct.
The welding is in accordance with WPS and being controlled within the WPS parameters, (current, volts, polarity, purge rates & travel speed).
The root run is visually acceptable to code, (where accessible), before filling the joint, (for single sided welds)
On double sided welds, the first run is inspected and subject to the required back-gouging/grinding, and visually free from defects, (NDE may be required, MT/PT).
Gouging/grinding is carried out to an approved method and to good workmanship/industry standard.
Inter-run cleaning is to WPS requirements or to good workmanship/industry standard.
4. Check the following after welding;
Weld identification, each weld is marked with the welder’s identification and is identified in accordance with drawing/weldmap
Weld appearance, ensure welds are suitable for all NDE, ( profile, cleanliness etc)
Check weld contour and run widths
Visually inspect welds and sentence in accordance with code/dimensional survey, (check rough dimensions/orientation are in accordance with drawing/code).
Drawings, ensure any modifications are noted for inclusion on as built drawings
PWHT, if required, should be monitored for compliance with procedure, check chart records.
Ensure all NDE has been requested and is complete and reports are available for records.
Repairs, should be monitored in compliance with applicable procedures
Documentation records, ensure all reports/records are completed and collated as required.
If repairs are evident, check for trends and particular welders. If no obvious root cause can be identified refer to Welding engineer.
5. Other Checks to be made:-
Gas bottles are stored correctly and restrained.
Purge gauges are not damaged.
Purge lines are not leaking.
Weld preparations are in accordance with WPS and/or drawings
Joint fit ups are in accordance with WPS/drawings
Tack welds are to good workmanship standard and to code/WPS requirements
No undue stress is being applied to the joint
Weld faces are free from defects, contamination and damage.
Welding equipment is in suitable condition and calibrated as appropriate
Ensure that all tools to be used are of the right type, (CS/SS, incl; grinding discs, wire brushes, stands, vices. etc)
6. For shop welding ensure that there is no through draught, pipe/structure is properly supported and in the correct position for welding and Welder has sufficient and safe access.
7. For site welding ensure that there is no wind or rain ingress, pipe/structure is properly supported and in the correct position for welding and Welder has sufficient and safe access.
8. Observe all relevant actions related to fabrication quality throughout production
9. Record or log all production inspection points relevant to the PQP & ITP, including final reports showing all identified imperfections and repair works.
